Markdown: a complete syntax cheat sheet

Markdown is a lightweight markup language created by John Gruber in 2004 year. It is widely used in README files, documentation, blogs, and version control systems. This article is a complete syntax cheat sheet with examples.

Headings

Headings are created with the # character. The level is determined by the number of hash marks:

Usage recommendations

1. Add a blank line before headings — this improves compatibility across parsers
2. Add spaces after list markers — required for correct rendering
3. Add a blank line before code blocks — prevents them from merging with the text
4. Specify a language for code blocks — enables syntax highlighting
