What Is JSON-LD
JSON-LD (JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data) is a structured data markup format recommended by Google for adding Schema.org markup to pages. Data is added in a <script type="application/ld+json"> block in the <head> or <body> section of a page.
JSON-LD is separate from the page's HTML code, making it easy to implement and maintain.
Why Use JSON-LD
JSON-LD can enable rich results in search:
- Breadcrumbs — a navigation path in the snippet
- FAQ — questions and answers directly in search results
- Recipes — preparation time, rating, calories
- Products — price, availability, rating
- Articles — publication date, author
- Organizations — address, phone number, hours of operation

Use Schema Validator to validate structured data markup. The tool:
- Extracts all JSON-LD blocks from a page
- Checks that Schema.org types are valid
- Shows errors and warnings
- Analyzes microdata and RDFa
FAQ
JSON-LD vs. Microdata — which is better? JSON-LD is the format recommended by Google. It is separate from HTML, making it easier to maintain and update. Microdata is embedded in HTML tags, which makes the code more complex.
Does JSON-LD guarantee rich snippets? No. JSON-LD is necessary but not sufficient. Google decides whether to show a rich snippet based on the quality of the content and the reliability of the data.
Can I add multiple JSON-LD blocks?
Yes, a page can have multiple <script type="application/ld+json"> blocks with different types of markup.
